Wet or dry food: what's best for your cat?
Walk down any pet food aisle and you will see shelves of pouches and big bags of biscuits. Both can be a complete diet, so the right choice depends on your cat.
Why choose wet food
- Extra hydration. Cats naturally drink little, and wet food is around 80% water, which supports kidney and urinary health.
- Flavour and variety. Pouches come in jelly, gravy and loaf styles, which helps with fussy eaters.
- Portion control. Single-serve pouches make it easy to measure each meal.
Why choose dry food
- Convenient. It can be left out for grazing cats and stays fresh in the bag.
- Great value. A large bag lasts a long time.
- Good for puzzle feeders. Biscuits work well in feeders that keep indoor cats active.
The best of both
Many owners feed wet food for one or two meals and leave a measured amount of dry food for the rest of the day. If you do this, reduce each portion so the total matches the daily amount on the packs.
Changing food
Switch gradually over 7 to 10 days, mixing a little more of the new food in each day. Always make sure fresh water is available, especially for cats on dry food.
